"Go and Open the Door" Choreographed and Created by Emma Briggs. Music by Chris Banstead and Olafur Arnalds.

“A poem called The Door by Miroslav Holub has been the inspiration for my piece. I have collaborated with the students to find different movement qualities and ideas that interpret the words with emotions and feelings.”

Amongst many other commitments, our students have been working hard on a feature for our upcoming April show. The interpretive dance piece explores emotions and the use of one’s body by investigating metaphors and symbolisms through movement. The classic poem examines stepping into the unknown, to widen one’s perspective and embrace the idea of change.

The Door by Miroslav Holub

Go and open the door.
Maybe outside there’s
a tree, or a wood,
a garden,
or a magic city.

Go and open the door.
Maybe a dog’s rummaging.
Maybe you’ll see a face,
or an eye,
or the picture
of a picture.

Go and open the door.
If there’s a fog
it will clear.

Go and open the door.
Even if there’s only
the darkness ticking,
even if there’s only
the hollow wind,
even if nothing is there,
go and open the door.

At least there’ll be a draught.

The poem, with its short and simple structure, uses repetition to emphasize its call to action.
